The global recycling industry gathers in Málaga to shape the future of the sector
With two weeks to go, the BIR World Recycling Convention expects record participation with over 1,500 professionals attending from many of the 73 member countries that make up the federation.
The Bureau of International Recycling (BIR) is preparing to welcome more than 1,500 recycling industry professionals to its World Recycling Convention, held at the Trade Fairs and Congress Center of Málaga (FYCMA) on (25), 26, and 27 October. This will be the first time Málaga hosts the event and the eleventh time Spain serves as host country for a BIR convention, reinforcing Spain’s position as one of the top global destinations for this gathering. FYCMA’s strong commitment to sustainability—including solar power usage, circular economy practices, and carbon footprint measurement—makes it an ideal setting to unite the global recycling industry.
The convention takes place at a critical juncture for the industry worldwide. Amid growing concern over European proposals to restrict exports of certain materials—which could compromise access to international markets and the resilience of global supply chains—the program will analyze key regulatory developments as well as international trade and market trends affecting companies globally. Additionally, the sessions will address the professional skills and talent required to secure the industry's future.
Among the keynote highlights, BIR has just announced youth researcher, leadership consultant, and expert in generational change and the future of work, Simon Schnetzer, as keynote speaker. In his address, titled "Generation Future: Building the Recycling Workforce of Tomorrow", Schnetzer will examine younger generations' expectations in the workplace and their implications for the sector, providing key insights on attracting, motivating, and empowering the talent that will lead the industry forward.
The event program also includes the following highlights:
-
A joint session by the Plastics Division and the Tyres & Rubber Committee.
-
Presentations by the International Environment Council and the International Trade Council.
-
Market updates and sector reports presented by BIR’s Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Metals Divisions, as well as its E-Scrap and Stainless Steel & Special Alloys Committees.
Susie Burrage, OBE, President of BIR, stated:
"It is hard to believe that this will be the eleventh time we hold a BIR World Convention & Exhibition in Spain, yet it will be our very first time in Málaga. Our members have expressed great enthusiasm about gathering in such a dynamic, evolving city—one that truly reflects the core values of our industry, such as resilience, collaboration, and innovation."
"While we find ourselves in a sun-and-sea setting, this convention is by no means a leisure trip. We are navigating one of the most challenging periods for the recycling industry. We are on the front lines of geopolitical tensions, regulatory shifts, and growing sustainability demands. Decisions made across the globe impact our operations directly and immediately—and not always favorably. That is why meetings like this one in Málaga allow us to speak with one voice and actively shape our own future."
Arnaud Brunet, Director General of BIR, added:
"The future will be a central theme of this meeting, and we want to actively engage the next generation of professionals. The recycling sector needs to attract top talent worldwide—mechanical engineers, scientists, economists, communications specialists, and advocates, among others. During the Málaga event, we will make major announcements regarding initiatives to attract and retain that talent."
