The IBS Paper Performance Group, technology leader in paper machine optimization, has significantly improved the reel change process on paper machines for kraftliner, board, and decor paper. By switching from conventional string-based paper tapes to the folded IBS Special Paper Tape, broke per reel change was reduced by up to 55%, thereby significantly increasing annual net production.
Kraftliner: 53% less broke per reel change
On a paper machine for kraftliner (6,650 mm width, 950 m/min speed), broke per turn-up was reduced by 53%, and annual net production was increased by 892 tons.
Board: 55% less broke per reel change
On a board machine (width: 5,150 mm, speed: 645 m/min), broke was reduced by 55% per reel change - from 129 kg to 58 kg. This resulted in an increase in annual net production of 1,738 tons.
Decor Paper: 54% less broke per reel change
Also, on a paper machine for décor paper the reel change process was also significantly improved. By switching from conventional paper tapes made of strings to the folded IBS Special Paper Tape, broke per reel change was reduced by 54%, and annual net production was increased by 286 tons. Machine width: 2,200 mm; speed: 215 m/min.
These reel change optimizations were made possible by the minimal tape thickness of IBS Special Paper Tapes. Due to a high-tech manufacturing process these are up to more than 50% thinner than conventional paper tapes made of strings. The thin tape thickness significantly minimizes paper marks on the core of the new reel spool, thereby ensuring a significantly higher yield at the winder. IBS paper tapes are fully recyclable in the material cycle and can be used with all tape-based reel change systems - regardless of web width, basis weight, or machine speed. IBS paper tapes are produced in Austria to the highest quality standards and are FSC® certified (FSC® C223253).
To ensure a reliable and efficient turn-up, double-sided IBS adhesive tapes made of tear- resistant fabric are also used. These provide maximum adhesive strength without contaminating the reel spool. After the unwinding process, the IBS adhesive tapes can be removed from the reel spool without leaving any residue.
